Web 2.0
New Concepts for the Web
Some time since the crash of the Internet Market, some thought the Internet was a dying fad.
However, the Internet continued to expand and multiply, with new sites popping up almost daily, and appearing, while older ones died out.
In this period, one can say that the new emerging concepts that came out, were more fit and capable of continuing in the new era of post-crash. And these ideas were termed as "Web 2.0"
While it's still not definitive what "Web 2.0" is, in terms of technical platforms, languages or requirements, it is a concept which can be experienced.
In the more traditional sites, one experiences viewing of information from a single source (the site's author), where as in the Web 2.0 concept, the users are part of the "authordom" of the site. Essentially, they can take part in the publishing of data, rating or evaluating information, or other similar things
Here are some concepts that can be considered part of the Web 2.0 experience:
RSS News Feeds
Publishing data through one site that can feed into other sites (as a syndicate) or to people's RSS clients
Wikipedia
A "wiki" is a site where people can edit the content of the site. The most famous version of a wiki is www.wikipedia.com, which is a "public-maintained" encyclopedia
Pod Casts
Pod casting is a method of distributing multimedia files over the web using RSS Feeds, or other syndication formats.
Blog
A blog (short for weblog) is site which allows one to make entries into it, much similar to a journal or a diary. Entries are dated, and can be "tagged" with topics, or headings.
Tagging is an important part of Web 2.0, and can allow complex search algorithms making it easy to find specific types of documents, by the use of "tag clouds" (complete listing of all tags, weighted by popularity shown in font size).
All in all, the Web 2.0 site have been able to virally explode and ramp up in traffic, where traditional promotion strategies could barely touch at enormous costs.
For these reasons, these strategies should be adopted by companies to expand their reach.
